Born March 10, 1917, Jeanette Beatrice Barnes was born in Brooklyn, New York, the oldest child of four. Though her parents wanted her to be a perfect lady, she tended more toward being a tomboy, getting her nose in places where it didn't belong and getting into fights with neighborhood bullies.

The day she found them trying to steal from Steve Rogers defined the rest of her life. She appointed herself his protector, becoming his best friend and trying to set him up with friends even to the day where she, trained as a nurse, was inducted into the Army Nurse Corps.

It was the first time in decades that they'd been separated, and the separation seemed final when the camp where she was stationed was attacked and she was taken captive by Hydra. As a woman, she was seen as easy experimentation fodder. What was done to her, she was never exactly sure, but she didn't exactly believe her luck when Steve Rogers, much taller and about three times as broad, rescued her from the Hydra camp.

As unpopular as the decision was, as soon as she was on her feet again, she made the choice to train with the weapons the men used and joined Steve's unit, the Howling Commandos, on the ground. She became a useful part of the effort as both a sharpshooter and using her small size to run reconnaissance on Hydra encampments.

Despite nightmares and a bitterness she'd never had before, she found herself satisfied with what she'd become. Since she'd met Steve, she's been part soldier and part nurse. She'd finally come into a role that felt like her. But then, on a speeding train above a ravine, everything she'd known came to an end. The last thing she saw was Steve reaching for her from the blasted-out side of the train.

The person that came out of that accident was not Betty Barnes. After enduring more experimentation, more surgeries, more pain, the implantation of a metal arm to replace the one lost to injury and frostbite, what was left was a stealthy assassin the intelligence community came to know as the Winter Soldier. There were many theories about who she was and how she'd come to be, but the last thing Steve Rogers expected to see behind a black Hydra mask was the girl he'd known all his life, looking at him like he was a stranger.
